History of Tomball

Tomball’s history dates back to the early 1900s, when it became a vital stop along the H&TC Railroad. Originally known as Peck, the town was renamed Tomball in 1907 in honor of Thomas Henry Ball, a lawyer and politician who played a key role in bringing the railroad to the area.

The discovery of oil in 1933 marked a turning point for Tomball, bringing an economic boom and earning it the nickname “Oiltown, USA.” The town thrived as oil and gas companies invested in the region, and to this day, energy plays a key role in the local economy.

While Tomball has grown into a modern suburban community, it has preserved its historic roots through its downtown district, museums, and annual heritage events. Today, the city is a blend of past and present, honoring its railroad and oil history while embracing new growth and development.
